Agentic Checkout: Buying Inside the Conversation
Agentic Checkout: Buying Inside the Conversation There's one part of agentic commerce that changes everything about how transactions happen. It's called agentic checkout.
Google is rolling out a feature that lets customers complete purchases directly inside AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app — without ever leaving the conversation.
Here's what it is and how it fits into the bigger picture.
What It Actually Is
A customer asks Google's AI, "What's the best carry-on luggage for frequent flyers?"
The AI recommends a product. Explains why it fits their needs.
In the old world: The customer clicks through to the website. Navigates to the product. Adds to cart. Enters shipping. Enters payment. Multiple steps. Multiple chances to drop off.
In the new world: They tap "Buy."
Google Pay pulls their saved payment method and shipping address from Google Wallet.
Done.
The purchase happens right there — inside the AI conversation where the decision was made.
How It Works
Agentic checkout runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) — the open standard co-developed by Google and Shopify.
The flow is simple:
1. Customer researches in AI Mode or Gemini
2. AI recommends products based on their needs
3. Customer decides to buy
4. Google Pay handles the transaction using saved payment and shipping info
5. Retailer fulfills the order
One important detail: You remain the seller of record.
Google isn't becoming the retailer. You still own the sale, the fulfillment, and the customer relationship.
PayPal support is coming soon as an additional payment option.
Why It Matters
Every step in a traditional checkout is a chance to lose the customer.
Click to website. Find product again. Add to cart. Create account. Enter details. Confirm.
Cart abandonment rates sit around 70%.
Most of that friction comes from the gap between deciding to buy and actually buying.
Agentic checkout removes that gap.
The customer makes a decision inside the AI conversation. They act on it immediately. No context switching. No distractions. No "I'll come back later."
Decision and transaction happen in the same moment.
How It Ties Together
This is where the full picture of agentic commerce comes into focus.
Discovery layer: AI assistants recommend products based on customer needs. Your product shows up because your data is solid.
Business Agent: Customer has questions. Your branded AI assistant answers them directly — in your voice, with your product knowledge.
Agentic checkout: Customer is ready to buy. They complete the purchase without leaving the conversation.
One continuous experience.
Customer asks → Gets recommendation → Has questions → Gets answers → Buys.
No jumping between platforms. No fragmented journey. No losing customers between steps.
What's Coming
Agentic checkout is rolling out now with eligible U.S. retailers.
Google has announced what's next:
→ Global expansion in the coming months
→ PayPal support as an additional payment option
→ Loyalty rewards — customers can apply rewards within the experience
→ Related product discovery — surface complementary items during checkout
→ Direct Offers — present exclusive discounts to customers ready to buy in AI Mode
The infrastructure is being built by Google, Shopify, and more than 20 major companies across retail and payments — including Target, Walmart, Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal.
The Bottom Line
Agentic checkout is the transaction layer of agentic commerce.
It's what turns AI conversations from research sessions into completed sales.
Customer discovers. Customer asks. Customer buys.
All in one place.
The brands preparing now — solid product data, Business Agent configured, checkout integration ready — will capture those sales when they happen.
